About You

As the Music Therapist, you bring a diverse skill set and vibrant personality to the role. Your dedication to staying informed about the latest developments in music therapy is evident through your ongoing education, continuous literature reviews, and active participation in professional groups. You seamlessly integrate into interdisciplinary teams, demonstrating both initiative and independent judgment. Effective verbal and written communication, solid teaching and organization skills are hallmarks of your approach. Proficient in playing a minimum of two musical instruments, including piano and/or guitar, coupled with your vocal abilities, you exhibit versatility with your various musical instruments and related equipment. Your capacity to articulate the philosophy, style, approach and benefits of music therapy in a long-term care senior setting is complemented by your hands-on ability to apply music therapy methods, systems and techniques. Additionally, your physical aptitude ensures you can successfully carry out the position’s duties, providing a holistic and enriching music experience for seniors in your care.

Must Haves

  • Baccalaureate degree in music therapy from a recognized educational institution.
  • Completion of a certificate applicable to the designated clinical area or combination of education, training or experience.
  • Current member and eligible for Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT) accreditation.
  • Music Therapist Accredited (MTA) credentials are preferred.
  • Two years of recent related experience in music therapy.

About The Role

  • This is a part-time, temporary contract position scheduled for 20 hours per week, ending April 30, 2024.
  • Identifies service needs and contributes to developing operational plans, goals and mission statements for new programs.
  • Performs initial assessments for referred residents, gathering relevant individual or group music therapy programs, prioritizing expected outcomes and determining available resources.
  • Implements diverse music therapy programs using approaches like improvisation and guided imagery.
  • Monitors program quality and outcomes, adjusting or ceasing services as needed.
  • Conducts orientation and education sessions on music therapy topics for residents, families and volunteers.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to identify, develop, review and revise departmental policies.
  • Contributes information on music therapy-related topics during interdisciplinary and family conferences and contributes to developing a multidisciplinary care plan for individual residents.
  • Actively participates in committees and task groups, providing input and updates to the department.
  • Maintains resident records, statistical data, and reports in compliance with organization and professional standards.
  • Manages music therapy equipment and supplies inventory, making purchase recommendations, conducting maintenance and repairs and completing necessary documentation.
  • Serves as a resource for staff, students, and volunteers on music therapy issues, providing information and answering questions.
  • Instructs staff and family on individual care plans, covering the proper use of recorded music and music preferences and creating a suitable sound environment for the patient or client population in designated clinical areas.
