Moving Our Profession Forward:

“Bridges and Borders in Music Therapy Community Practices: Drinking From a Deeper Well”. Featuring Dr. Alpha Woodward, Conference Keynote Speaker

Saturday November 9th 2024

How do we build bridges when the mantra coming through social media is all about strengthening borders? Compassion fatigue and indifference can set in when we are continually bombarded by news about the peril of others in far distant communities. How is it possible to sustain compassion for the unthinkable somewhere else? Using my experiences in a culture where imposed post-war ethnic boundaries created fractured communities unable to heal themselves, and my research on populations fleeing dangerous environments, this presentation looks at how music therapists build bridges in deeply divided communities and bolster resilience for people who live in limbo along the fringes of their old and new cultures. Although the focus is on distant populations, the experience of feeling lost without a cultural identity is relevant and deeply felt within our community practices closer to home. The distance is not that far.

Dr. Alpha Woodward, PhD, MTA, FAMI:  From January 2004-2007 Dr. Woodward was the field director for an international team of music therapists working with children and youth who had been traumatized during the Balkan wars (1990-1995). Since 2010 she has been instructing and directing music therapy programs in Canada, Ireland and the USA. Her publications, usually in narrative form, feature ecological practices in healthcare settings and the community building potential of arts-based practices in war affected regions. She has presented her humanitarian work internationally including the Ukraine, USA, Argentina, Sweden, Ireland, and Croatia. In 2007, she received Capilano University’s inaugural alumni award for her work in Bosnia. She is delighted to come full circle back to Capilano University, teaching in the very program she received her training.
