MTABC Guitar Skills Workshop – “The Blues”

Learning Outcomes:

  • review of technique and posture 
  • spend time learning the essence of the blues
  • the basic structure of the blues, various blues strum patterns, pentatonic scale and how to put it all together
  • practice Therapeutic implementations 
  • The workshop will be structured to include interactive presentations, breakout sessions, and opportunities for real-world application of concepts.

Workshop Synopsis:

Bring your guitars, picks and guitar stands and come learn the blues at your own pace!  The blues can feel ambiguous and unfamiliar.  In this workshop practical blues techniques will be covered for use in your music therapy work.  The blues has a relatable basic structure allowing for improvisation through the lyrics, and other instruments to join.  

Presenter Bio:

Camilla Schroeder (BA, Capilano University) is a certified music therapist (MTA) and neurologic music therapist who teaches Guitar Private Music Instruction in the Music Therapy program at Capilano University. She also works as a music therapist in long-term care and oncology, supervises practicum and internship students regularly, and has contributed to the profession as a board member with the Music Therapy Association of BC. She has presented at CAMT and MTABC conferences and led a research project examining the impact of music therapy on seniors with the support of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.
