What You Will Do

Summary

Under the direction of the Professional Practice Leader, Music Therapy the Music Therapist uses music as the primary modality to assess and treat patients and serves as a resource to rehabilitation staff, particularly in Extended Care, and to the interdisciplinary team. Performs related educational and assigned administrative duties.

What You Bring

Education:

  • Baccalaureate degree from recognized Music Therapy Program and one (1) year of recent related experience in an extended care setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Eligible for registration with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists (CAMT).

Your Day to Day:

 

  • Plans, organizes, implements, modifies, and evaluates music therapy programs designed to improve or maintain residents’ physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning.
  • Provides music therapy assessments and treatments using recognized techniques and practices. Consults with the interdisciplinary team to recommend appropriate music therapy programs based on residents’ needs and capabilities, and coordinates music therapy with other therapeutic activities.
  • Records, maintains, and updates resident records, including assessment, treatment, and statistical data, in accordance with departmental and facility policies.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities of the Music Therapy Department by offering input to the Professional Practice Leader on developing and evaluating written procedures, standards, assessment forms, resident materials, and program descriptions for assigned service areas.
  • Maintains and updates inventory of musical equipment and materials, ensuring their safe and appropriate use. Makes recommendations for the purchase, maintenance, and repair of musical equipment and supplies to the Professional Practice Leader.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary care conferences as required to provide information on patient/resident status.
  • Stays informed about current developments in music therapy by reviewing professional literature, consulting with other professionals, and participating in approved educational programs.
  • Contributes to the orientation of staff, students, and volunteers by providing in-services as needed.
  • Participates in the music therapy student fieldwork program by providing supervision and instruction as required.
  • Attends and contributes to music therapy council meetings as designated.
  • Supports education and research activities within the field.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
