Compensation: Alignment of HEABC – HSP Grid 8 ($36.59-$45.66 per hour)

YOUR ROLE

 

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Counselling & Bereavement Services the music therapist provides children and their families with music therapy consultations and services. They will be comfortable offering a variety of music therapy sessions tailored to the needs of each child and their family in the moment. Some sessions may be more receptive in nature, supporting with relaxation style music to aid a child with sleep or pain management, while others might require more active participation such as playing instruments, singing, moving to music, writing/composing songs etc.

 

To be effective in this role the music therapist needs to multitask by playing music, interacting with patients and family members of varying ages, making assessments, and evaluating interventions. They will be meticulous and compassionate and have strong problem-solving skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to develop patient and family goals of care.
  • Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team and actively contributing to various organizational events, initiatives and committees.
  • Providing compassionate support and actively participating in bereavement programming, such as bereavement groups and the annual memorial event.
  • Designing musical interventions based on therapeutic goals to improve patients’ psychological, physical, and social health.
  • Providing individual, family and group music therapy sessions.
  • Inviting patients and their family members to interact by encouraging them to participate by singing, playing percussive instruments and moving to music
  • Monitoring patients during musical interventions and measuring the effectiveness of sessions.
  • Contributing to patients’ care plans; charting records of patients’ progress; keeping statistics.
  • Videotaping patients on a periodic basis to record memories to provide families of children on our program.
  • Maintaining musical instruments and order in the music therapy room.
  • Overseeing and mentoring Music Therapist interns.
  • Assumes other related responsibilities, as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy. A minimum of 5 years’ experience working with children and youth. Accredited with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists (CAMT). A Master’s in Music Therapy or Counselling is an asset.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Outstanding people skills.
  • Proficient with playing guitar, piano and percussive instruments.
  • Excellent singing abilities.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Aside from being well-educated and passionate about music, the ideal therapist will have a passion for working with children and youth with disabilities and/or complex health conditions, helping them improve their quality of life through music.
  • Must show extreme patience and feel comfortable working with patients who may have difficulty communicating their wants and needs.

·         Flexibility is necessary, as this position may require occasional weekend and evening work and travel within and outside the Lower Mainland.
